Gorey Writers Group take on new heights during anthology launch

- By CATHY LEE

IT was a night of celebration for all at Gorey Writers Group during the launch of its latest anthology, ‘Taking Flight’, which includes submissions from a total of 26 local writers.

Taking Flight is the second anthology made up of poetry, short stories and memoirs, and follows on from the first collection published in 2016, Fledglings, which marked ten years of the group.

The book itself was published by Boland publishers and Carol Boland is a member of the group, and the illustration was by Aoife Barrett.

It was launched by Jackie Hayden of Sony Music and close to 150 people gathered in Gorey Library to be the first to get their hands on the latest work of Gorey Writers Group.

The night included readings from the published writers, who could be identified by their wearing of yellow stickers, as well as musical performances from the Cantabile Community Choir.

Bernie Walsh of Gorey Writers Group said that the book represents growth within the group.

‘Taking Flight is us moving on from Fledglings, and we spent over a year from beginning to end as we first started talking about it in September of last year.

‘We had contributors of all ages, from 17 to 75, and the people who came along to the night got a chance to meet the authors and discuss their work.

‘This was all funded by the writers in Gorey and we are selling it ourselves. I want to thank them all for making the book happen.’

‘To celebrate it we had a great night with an amazing crowd, with all the entertainment we had as well. There really was a part atmosphere,’ said Bernie.

Taking Flight is now on sale in Red Books Wexford and Zozimus bookshop in Gorey and it costs €10.
