Wexford natives elected to Labour Youth Executive

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

THE daughter of former Labour councillor Joe Ryan is beginning to carve her own path within the party, having been elected to Labour Youth’s eight person National Executive.

Wexford town native Aoife Ryan (20) will take up the role of International Officer and will join a fellow Wexfordian in the form of Gorey’s David Monaghan (22) who was elected Communications Officer.

Inheriting a strong interest in politics from her father, Aoife attended the Presentation Secondary School and was a founding member of the feminist society while in school.

‘I’m delighted to have been elected as International Officer,’ she said. ‘Whether we realise it or not, international politics shapes our daily lives and I’m excited to play an important role in shaping Labour Youth’s international policies over the next two years.’

Meanwhile, David attended Gorey Community College before going on to study in

Dublin’s National College of art and Design. He hopes his work with Labour can better his local community.

‘My experiences in Gorey have given me the drive to build an inclusive and truly equal society where everyone has access to good public services and decent work,’ he said. ‘I’m delighted to be elected to the National Youth Executive, where I will put my values into practice and help create an organisation that welcomes everyone.’

Labour leader Brendan Howlin pointed out that with people like Aoife and David to the fore, the future looks bright for Labour in the model county.

‘Labour has a long tradition in Wexford, and its future is in good hands with new rising stars in Labour Youth and new young members joining the party,’ he said.

‘Labour Youth has played an important role in rebuilding Labour. I wish Wexford’s own David and Aoife a very successful year on the national LY Executive.’
