Tributes flow as Pat finishes with council after 42 years

-

WHILE the work that goes on behind the scenes at County Council HQ can often go unheralded, the members joined together to heap praise on a departing member of staff who has been a permanent fixture in Wexford County Council for the past 42 years.

During her tenure, Pat Devereux has been the first port of call at the office of the County Manager for everyone from members of the council to members of the public. The genuine esteem in which she’s held was evident among the members, who took it in turns to pay tribute to her and share stories as they bid her a fond farewell and wished her all the very best in her retirement.

County Council Chairman Cllr Michael Sheehan said: ‘I just want to say a huge thanks to Pat for all the advice, the bookings and everything else you do for us. The respect and esteem in which you’re held shows. You’re part of the family here and we will really miss you.’

Tom Enright joked that Pat effectively did the work of the Chief Executive in the council herself a lot of the time.

‘She’s only half way into training me in as Chief Executive and she’s heading off,’ he laughed. ‘I can’t thank Pat enough for the support she’s shown me since I arrived here. 42 years is a long time and a rest is well-earned. I hope you get the time for a few well deserved holidays now and I wish you every health and happiness in your retirement.’

All of the councillors paid tribute to Pat, with Cllr John Hegarty commenting that if you really wanted to know what was going on, Pat was the person to talk to.

‘I’m in shock,’ Pat said, not having expected to be hauled up to the top table at the monthly meeting. ‘Thank you all so much. I’ve loved my time working in the council. It’s been so entertaining and interesting, but the best part is the memories I’ve made over the years here. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure. Thank you all so much.’

A presentation to Pat followed and she was given a rapturous round of applause from members and staff alike.
