New faces at Gorey Garda Station

IN WITH THE NEW AS INSPECTOR O’TOOLE TAKES HOLD OF THE ROPES

- By CATHY LEE

GOREY GARDA STATION has welcomed some new staff members to the force, following on from the deployment of inspector Pat Cody to Cyprus to start a mission with the United Nations, a role he begins this week.

In his place is inspector Fergal O’Toole who has been newly promoted from the Waterford district.

A six week hand over process took place between the two inspectors to insure a smooth transition, and Sgt Ennis confirmed that all gardaí at the station look forward to the new chapter.

‘He’s a vastly experienced inspector and he comes from an exceptionally busy centre. His great bank of skills, knowledge and experience will be an addition to our district’.

Inspector Pat Cody is expected to return to Gorey in a year’s time.

In the meantime, gardaí said that the biggest challenges for the Gorey district are a lack of resources, the scourge of drugs in the community and the knock on affect this has on families and young people in the town and the hinterlands.

Sgt Ennis described Fergal as the ‘right fit’ for the district, and assured that he has been fully briefed on the running of the district at this stage.

As well as this, two new gardaí have started in Gorey and they are Roksana Witaszek and Sorcha Walsh.

Roksana, who is originally from Poland, served as a reserve in Kilkenny and Sgt Ennis confirmed that she has plenty of experience.

‘Although she was not a member of the police in Poland, she studied accountancy and economics in Poland.

‘We see that she will be a great addition to the station given the Polish community in the town. She will act as a point of contact and any cases of there being a language barrier is not going to an issue,’ he said.

While Sorcha Walsh is a new recruit and her new position in Gorey is her first posting.

She is a native of Kilkenny, and holds a degree in psychology and sociology.

Last but not least, garda Ian Waters will be joining forces with gardaí in Gorey starting this week and he comes from serving in Dublin.

‘Each unit has a good mix of genders and we are delighted to have them. We wish them all very well, hoping for a long and fruitful career in Gorey,’ said Sgt Ennis.
