Wexford duo part of Sigerson shock

AWEXFORD duo featured in a shock outcome on Sunday, when I.T. Carlow travelled to Kerry and dumped an I.T. Tralee side including David Clifford out of the Sigerson Cup thanks to three late goals.

Cathal Walsh of Monageer-Boolavogue played at corner-back for the winners, while county Senior Niall Hughes (Kilanerin) contribute­d a point from his corner-forward berth. The winners’ panel also includes all-rounder Nick Doyle (Starlights), currently assisting Enniscorth­y in the All-Ireland rugby league.

Elsewhere in the Sigerson Cup, Martin O’Connor (HWH-Bunclody) was corner-back on the U.C.D. team in their 0-13 to 0-11 dismissal of U.L., but Gavin Sheehan (Gusserane) and his U.L. colleagues bowed out to I.T. Sligo by 0-8 to 0-5.

Two club colleagues featured prominentl­y among the scorers as I.T. Carlow defeated U.C.D. by 3-20 to 2-16 in the Fitzgibbon Cup hurling opener in Billings Park.

Cathal Dunbar scored 1-4 for the winners, with his Naomh Eanna team-mate, Charlie McGuckin, contributi­ng 2-0 for the home side.

Shane Reck (Oylegate-Glenbrien) was corner-back for the victors, with clubmate Seamus Casey and Rory Higgins (Rathnure, 0-1) coming on, while their squad also features Adam Howlin (Shelmalier­s) and Michael Redmond (Rathnure). Conor Scallan (Ferns St. Aidan’s) was among the U.C.D. substitute­s.

The Wexford crew backboned D.C.U. in their 0-21 to 0-18 win against U.L., with Oisín Foley (Crossabeg-Ballymurn) in goal, a midfield pairing of Damien Reck (Oylegate-Glenbrien, 0-1) and Conor Firman (St. Martin’s, 0-1), Rory O’Connor (St. Martin’s) also getting a point from centre-forward, and Conor Hearne (Shelmalier­s) in the right corner.

Others from Wexford to feature included Connal Flood (Cloughbawn), who came on for W.I.T. in their 1-23 to 1-14 victory versus L.I.T., and Diarmuid Kehoe (Geraldine O’Hanrahans) and Eoin Molloy (Naomh Eanna) who helped Maynooth to a narrow 0-16 to 0-15 win against Trinity.
