Bargain hunters enjoy the sales
THE JANUARY SALES came early as Gorey shoppers came out in force after an enjoyable but brief rest over Christmas, and joined together to form a line along Gorey Main street in joyful hope of bargains in time for the seasonal sales.
Lining up outside Funge’s Gorey for a sale that began on December 27 at 10.30 a.m., many were very excited to be the first people to enter the shop for the annual rush.
Colm Funge said that this is a tradition that has gone from strength to strength for the last ten years or so, and is something that locals really like to engage with.
‘A lot of people look forward to it and they wait to do their shopping until then. It has always been busy for us.
‘It went fairly well this year, pretty much the same as last year. It’s pretty manic and chaotic so as staff it’s just about managing it,’ he said.
The Funge’s half price sale was described by some shoppers as a ‘proper January sale’ and Colm said that this goes along with the tradition.
He said that both staff and customers enjoy the excitement involved.
Although the initial rush has now died off for the most part, shoppers are still out hunting for bargains across the county as the sales continue for the month.
Funge’s Gorey is just one retailer that is willing to keep up the tradition.
‘It’s all about giving the people what they want,’ said Colm Funge.
Shops will now prepare for the coming spring season, with new stock soon to appear on shelves.
