St. Peter’s pass schools test

Perfect day for county cross-country championships

-

THE WEXFORD schools cross-country took place in Adamstown on Thursday.

Meet organiser Ger Forde, working closely with Marie Mooney of Adamstown A.C. and Paddy Morgan of Wexford Athletics, ensured that the day went like clockwork.

The one-field course was in excellent shape and the weather, while a bit misty, was fine. It was a perfect day, then, for cross-country running.

There were some quality individual runs, with all of the favourites coming out on top.

Race of the day was the Intermediate boys which saw Joe Byrne (Gorey C.S.) and Myles Hewlett (New Ross C.B.S.), two of Wexford’s top under-age athletes, squaring up to each other.

The Gorey lad opened up a clear lead in the latter stages to take the win.

International athlete Claragh Keane (Presentation Wexford) was expected to romp home in the Intermediate girls’ race.

While she went on to win, Elizabeth Gahan (Gorey C.S.), who has a good record in schools cross-country, was chasing hard towards the end and she took the silver.

Loreto’s Clíona Kearney looked good in winning the Junior girls’ race. There were a mere three athletes in the Senior girls’ race but that should not take from stylish Eve Furlong’s win.

There was a big turn-out for the Senior men’s race. Morgan Haydon (St. Peter’s) left it until well into the last of the three laps before cruising away from the field.

Schoolmate Ronan Griffin did come back at him late on but it was too little, too late, and Morgan stayed on to take the title.

St. Peter’s College won the trophy for best overall club ahead of Wexford C.B.S. and Loreto in joint second, with St. Mary’s and Good Counsel, both New Ross, taking joint third.

This Thursday, those athletes with hopes of making it through to Leinster and All-Irelands travel to Carlow for the South Leinster championships.
