GAA ‘ACTIV8’

Our local GAA and camogie and Ladies’ Football clubs have launched a programme to promote physical activity and well being. This is not a fundraising event and is open to everyone in the community, young and old.

The activities will include a 4.5km walk/run each Saturday, alternating between Boolavogue and Monageer, free guided circuit training sessions each Wednesday night, yoga each Thursday night and some hill walking and nature trail hiking at weekends.

The children have been given an ‘Activ8 Card’ that they can get stamped and record the distance they travelled on each activity. As well as getting fit, you can come along and meet new people and get involved in your local community.

BOOT APPEAL

Monageer-Boolavogue GAA Club is facilitating a parishioner who is asking for donations of football boots and runners that are no longer being worn. This is part of the ‘In My Shoes’ appeal, which ships used sports’ boots and runners to needy children in townships in South Africa. It is hoped to ship 5,000 plus pairs to Cape Town this year. If you have any, reasonably clean pairs that you no longer need, please drop them into the Old Complex in Monageer before Friday.

WELL DONE CATHAL.

On Wednesday last, January 29, in the DCU sports’ grounds in Dublin, Cathal Walsh togged out at wing back for the IT Carlow team in the Sigerson Cup final. However, there was no fairytale end to the campaign for our Monageer-Boolavogue star as a determined, skilled and ruthless DCU team went on to win by seven points.

Their three point lead, 0-5 to 0-2, at the break did not really reflect their dominance and of the 0-7 Carlow managed to score by the time the final whistle blew, only one came from play while only six of DCUs final tally of 14 points came from frees.

SOCCER NEWS

The ladies’ team, understrength due to illesss, lost out heavily to Fastnet Rovers on Sunday, January 26.

The Men’s ‘A’ team also lost, but in extra time, after a cracker of a Wexford cup tie away to Clougbawn. Matthew Dunne had our lads ahead early in play but Cloughbawn found form and relentlessly probed our defences. Inevitably they drew level but Mark Walsh smashed Cormac’s back into a 2-1 lead just before the break. Cloughbawn dominated the second half and an early shower for John Ivory did not help our cause. However, brilliant goalkeeping from man-of-the-match, Bobby Larkin, made is seem that an upset was on the cards. But with less than four minutes remaining, Cloughbawn drew level, forcing extra time. Making the most of their numerical advantage, they banged home two fine goals to eventually win by 4-2.

The previous day, the under-16s, who top their table on goal difference half-way through the season, beat Gorey Celtic by 4-0. Sam Tyrrell, Ian Rigley, Seán Kirwan and Christopher Jordan-Kelly all rattled the net.

The under-14s were at home to Bree United on Saturday and maintained their good form with an 8-1 win. A goal apiece from Jack Turner and Alex Keegan, two from Bobby Codd, a converted penalty from Abram O’Neill and a hat-trick from Seán Óg Gilbride made up the scoring.
