New safety zones in operation on roads across the county

- By SIMON BOURKE

NEW safety camera zones are now in operation on roads throughout the county following an investigation carried out by An Garda Síochána.

Having determined the most dangerous areas in Wexford, 15 new camera zones have been installed, bringing the total number in operation to 36. In addition, a further 35 zones in Wexford have been discontinued due to improved driver behaviour at these locations.

The new camera zones have been installed in the following areas:

On the Duncannon Road (R733) for a distance of 3.57km.

On the Dublin Road beginning before the Clavas Roundabout and continuing on to the Blackstoops Roundabout for 2.68 km.

On the R741 outside Ballycanew heading northward for 5.48km.

On the N11 outside Oilgate heading towards Enniscorthy for 6.43km.

On the L3041 for 2.82km between Murrintown Upper and Gorteenminoge Upper

On the L5082 Mill Road, Gorey for 1.36km.

On the R731 between Ballywilliam and Rathnure for 5.64km.

On the R739 from the L3045 to where it links to the Rosslare Road for 2.91km

On the R741 roundabout outside Gorey train station to the Ballycanew Road Roundabout for 1.36km.

On the R744 from the Ballaghkeen to Tomnafunshoge Roundabouts for 1.92km

On the R772 outside Ferns towards Camolin for 2.88km.

On the Rosslare Road outside Killinick (N25) to the Drinagh Roundabout for 5.89km.

On the New Ross Relief Road for 3.02km northwards.

On the N30 outside Clonroche for 6.07km towards Enniscorthy

In the Shannon, Enniscorthy for 0.79km

There have been five fatal road collisions in the above locations which has led to An Gardaí prioritising driver safety in these zones. In the first three months of last year 85% of road deaths nationwide occurred outside safety camera zones.

However, road deaths across the country decreased from 415 in 2000 to 148 in 2019.

In total, there are now 1,322 speed enforcement zones nationwide where safety cameras will operate effective from Monday, February 17

Superintendent Tony Lonergan of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said, ‘The safety cameras are proven life savers and only operate in areas which have a speed related collision history where fatal, serious injury and now minor injury collisions occur.’
