Full steam ahead as Gorey’s St Patrick’s Day parade is launched

- By CATHY LEE

WITH LESS THAN a month to go before the big day, the launch night for Gorey’s St Patrick’s Day parade took place at Browne’s Bar and included live music from traditional band Aris as well as good company.

A spokesperson for the committee said that the event was well attended, and that all involved hope only for that keen interest to grow.

‘We want everyone to know that all are welcome. The parade this year is going to be very inclusive for all of Gorey.

‘Our committee and everyone that has been involved so far are so excited, and the theme this year is sights and sounds of the decade’.

The Gorey Parade will commence at 3 p.m. on St Patrick’s Day, March 17, and all entries into the parade will be staging on the new link road from the Carnew Road, Hollyfort Road and Fort Road. There is no staging on the Enniscorthy Road or at the Monument.

There are no road closures but diversions will be in place whilst the parade is moving down past The Monument, McCurtain Street, Main Street and dispersing after the Review Stand on Esmonde Street.

A presentation of prizes will take place immediately after parade on Esmonde Street viewing stand.

If any business organisation, charity or community group are interested still in being part of the parade, applications forms are available from Gorey Visitor’s Centre on Main street as well as the civic offices on the Avenue.

Gorey’s Joe Dixon made his appearance at the launch night having been chosen as this year’s parade grand marshal.

He was presented with the sash, and all present celebrated with him including his wife Catriona Dixon.

When asked why Joe was chosen for the role, the committee spokesperson said it came down to his work ethic.

‘He was chosen for his work with Cycle Against Suicide, only the week previous he did his annual Splashthon event. We feel his work to do with the organisation should be commended’.

As time ticks closer to March 17, the people of Gorey can find updates on the parade on Facebook and Instagram by searching ‘Gorey St Patrick’s Parade.
