- By MARIA PEPPER

This year’s Write By The Sea Literary Festival will feature Colm Tóibín, one of Ireland’s greatest living writers in its programme for the fifth annual event taking place in Kilmore Quay from Friday, September 25 to Sunday, 27.

The internationally-renowned author who has been shortlisted three times for the Booker Prize, will take part in two key events as part of Write By The Sea 2020.

On Sunday September 27, the festival audience will be treated to an afternoon of readings and musings from Colm in conversation with his fellow Enniscorthy man, author and critic, Peter Murphy.

On Saturday September 26, Colm will interview Andrew O’Hagan, the Scottish-born novelist, whose earlier work was shortlisted for both the Booker Prize and the Whitbread First Novel Award. Andrew is currently Editor at Large of London Review of Books and Esquire Magazine.

Announcing Colm Tóibín’s participation in this year’s festival, Chairperson, Lucy Moore said his writing touches a universal chord, and the committee are delighted and honoured that he will attend the fifth Write By The Sea Festival.

Full details of the programme will be announced on the festival website in the coming weeks. ‘We are fully confident that our discerning audience will be captivated by this year’s line-up of national and international writers and presenters’, said Lucy.

Colm Tóibín was born in Enniscorthy in 1955, educated in CBS Enniscorthy, St Peter’s College, Wexford and U.C.D. He is the author of nine novels, including Brooklyn and Nora Webster, and two collections of stories. He has been shortlisted three times for the Booker Prize, and his play The Testament of Mary was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2013.

He is a contributing editor at the London Review of Books and Mellon Professor of Humanities at Columbia University in New York. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages.

The Write By The Sea Literary Festival has previously hosted such literary figures as John Banville, Jennifer Johnston, Dervla Murphy, Mike McCormack, Sara Baume, Eleanor McEvoy, Billy Roche and Donal Ryan.

‘Whether you are an avid reader, an aspiring writer or someone new to the richness of the Write By The Sea experience, Kilmore Quay will, yet again, be the place to be on the last weekend in September’, said Lucy.

The Write By The Sea committee would like to thank Wexford County Council, The Arts Council and their sponsors for their continued support. For further details and to book tickets, visit www.writebythesea.ie or email festival@writebythesea.ie
