Man killed and woman critical after N25 crash
A MAN was killed and a young woman critically injured in an accident near Ballinaboola on Monday morning.
Dean O’Neill died at around 5 a.m. after his 2006 BMW crossed the N25 and collided with a pillar in front of a house.
Dean, 29, from New Ross, was travelling from the Carrigbyrne direction towards New Ross when the single vehicle accident occurred just beyond Ballinaboola on a slight bend.
His car was written off in the collision, which also lead to the woman in the car sustaining serious injuries.
Gardaí and two units of New Ross Fire Service arrived at the scene and cut the woman from the car. Tragically Dean died at the scene and his remains were removed to University Hospital Waterford by ambulance for a post mortem.
The female passenger, who is in her early 20s and from New Ross, was also removed to the hospital, prior to being transferred to Cork University Hospital for specialist treatment.
Forensic Collision Investigators attended the scene and the N25 was closed from the new bypass roundabout to Ballinaboola until around noon, with local diversions put in place.
New Ross Garda Superintendent John McDonald said: ‘Like any of these situations it’s tragic because someone has died and their family and friends are left behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with the female passenger and with his family and friends.’
Gardaí at New Ross are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward and for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time to make it available to gardaí.
‘We want to speak to anyone you may have witnessed anything that occurred at either side of 5 a.m. This includes anyone who we haven’t already spoken to who can be of assistance to us in our investigation.’
Anyone with information is asked to contact New Ross Garda Station on 051 426030, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
