-

WEXFORDMAN Paddy (Pipes) Fanning of Harriestown, Ballymitty who died recently was well known in horse racing circles as a jockey and trainer.

He won many races in both point to point and on the track all over Ireland. One of his proudest moments was when he won the south-eastern championship as a young jockey.

Paddy was the much loved husband of Anna and father of Matthew and the late P.J. He was a son of Ciss and the late Matt Fanning of Harriestown, Ballymitty.

His funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, Ballymitty by by Fr. Martin Pender.

A guard of honour was provided by fellow jockeys as the funeral cortege left the church for burial.

During the Mass, symbols of Paddy’s life were brought to the altar by his sister Modgie, who carried Paddy’s racing helmet and his sister-in-law Elsie Cummins who presented a cigarette maker which Paddy used to roll his own cigarettes.

The Offertory Gifts were brought to the alter by Paddy’s grand children Kyle, and Katie, and the readings were done by Mellissa and Lorraine.

Beautiful music was played in the church by Tony Jeffers while Paddy Murphy played the bagpipes at the graveside.

A Eulogy was given by Paddy’s son Matthew in which he recalled highlights of his dad’s racing career.

Paddy is survived by his loving wife Anna, son Matthew, granny Ciss. and sisters Modgie and Ita and his grandchildren Kyle, Katie, and Paudie.

He was laid to rest beside his beloved son P.J. There will be no months Mind Mass due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
