Shels survive strong Sars revival
THE SECOND round of games in the county football championships took place, with Shelmaliers surviving a strong second-half Sarsfields rally to win their Group A clash in Wexford Park by 3-11 to 3-8.
Craig McCabe hit 2-2 for the winners, while substitute Liam Donnelly contributed 1-2, and their accuracy was much needed after goals from Lee Chin (two) and Eoin Roche inspired a Sars comeback.
St. Anne’s edged another tight battle, for the second week running, to remain unbeaten, with Jack Murphy getting the goal in their 1-7 to 0-5 win over Fethard in Taghmon.
And Adamstown bounced back from a heavy loss to the Shels when they saw off St. Fintan’s by 3-12 to 1-6, with Paddy Whitty (2-1) and Conor Hickey (1-4) leading the scoring stakes.
In Group B, Intermediate holders St. James’ got off the mark when a Kevin O’Grady hat-trick powered his team to a 3-10 to 1-10 win over Gusserane in New Ross.
Castletown bounced back to beat Horeswood by 1-18 to 2-11 in Bellefield, with Pierce Maxwell hitting the net, while St. Martin’s were comfortable 1-17 to 1-2 victors over Starlights in Taghmon.
Moving to the Intermediate grade, Emmet Kent kicked a late leveller from a free for Clongeen to ensure they shared the spoils with next door neighbours Bannow-Ballymitty on an 0-8 each scoreline.
Tiarnan Rossiter was the goalscorer as St. Mary’s (Rosslare) saw off Kilmore by 1-13 to 1-9 on the same double bill in Rathangan, while Kilanerin had a double scores win against St. Mary’s (Maudlintown) in Monamolin (1-11 to 0-7).
Craig Doyle and Robert Dempsey hit hat-tricks as Glynn-Barntown destroyed Craanford by 8-13 to 0-4.
HWH-Bunclody beat Taghmon-Camross by 2-14 to 1-8, while Ballyhogue accounted for Ferns St. Aidan’s (3-11 to 0-9).
Réalt na Mara ran riot in Intermediate ‘A’ football, hammering Davidstown-Courtnacuddy by 7-12 to 0-5 in a complete mis-match.
