‘Deeply Dippy’ was the third single from London’s Right Said Fred, a band formed in 1989 by brothers Fred and Richard Fairbrass.

The single spent three weeks at the top of the UK charts in April 1992, ending the two-months-at-the-top reign of Shakespears Sister’s ‘Stay’. It was very popular in Ireland, where it topped the chart for four weeks, and was also a hit in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

‘Deeply Dippy’ was Right Said Fred’s first and only number one in the UK, but not their biggest and best-known hit. That honour goes to ‘I’m Too Sexy’, their debut single. it only failed to reach No. 1 in the UK because of the dominance of Bryan Adams’ ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’ which made chart history by spending sixteen consecutive weeks at the top.

‘I’m Too Sexy’ lodged at number two in the UK for six weeks but did reach the top in the US, making Right Said Fred the first band to reach the number one slot in the US with a debut single since The Beatles.

Getting back to this week’s retro top ten, Iron Maiden were at one of their singles chart peaks when ‘Be Quick Or Be Dead’ reached number two. Two years earlier, the east London band formed in 1975 had enjoyed their first number one hit with ‘Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter’.

Still going strong, Iron Maiden rank among the most successful heavy metal bands of all time, with over 100 million album sales under their belts. – JIM HAYES
