Residents smash €2,000 target

OAKHILL LOCALS TAKE ON RELAY IN AID OF ST AIDAN’S

- By CATHY LEE

RESIDENTS of Gorey’s Oakhill estate marked the May Bank Holiday in a very special way when they came together – while keeping their distance – to fundraise for St Aidan’s Day Care Centre.

The team set a target of raising €2,000 but had surpassed it within the first five days, leading up to the race that took place yesterday, May 4.

‘As a community, we decided to come together to raise funds for a very worthy local cause. In light of the challenges faced in these difficult times, we wished to show our support for St Aidan’s Day Care Centre,’ said the event organiser, Darren Burke.

‘In recent weeks, the hospital staff have been faced with unprecedented changes and challenges to their daily working tasks. As we all know, they are working under exceptional circumstances, like so many other brave front line workers around the country and we wanted to help.

‘From 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., we aimed to run 247 kilometres as a combined effort, in a relay format, to represent the tireless work carried out by those in care centres 24/7. While many of us are not in a position to help in a hands on and practical sense, we hope that by raising some funds we can contribute in a small way to the efforts of those working tirelessly’.

Residents from 25 households decided to come gather in their groups to run, walk or cycle and complete the relay on a 400 metre loop set up at the Oakhill estate.

The team hope that their efforts will raise more hope about St Aidan’s, and encourage more local estates to take on some similar fundraising activities.

As this newspaper went to press the figure raised stood at €3,260 and the fund will remain open until Friday.
