NORTH WEXFORD 2K CLEAN BECOMES THE CHILD FRIENDLY ‘MY 2K TIDY UP’

-

FOLLOWING disappointment at the cancellation of the annual North Wexford 2K Clean, Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District, in collaboration with LoveGorey, is set to host a Kids ‘My 2K Tidy Up’ competition.

The change to the event this year echoes the current government restrictions, so rather than choosing a two kilometre area to clean up, children and families are being asked to put on a pair of gloves, bring a rubbish bag and go for a walk to gather rubbish and debris from roads, paths and ditches within a two kilometre radius of their home.

Guidelines on how to take part will be posted on the LoveGorey website and all ages are welcome to join in.

‘When they have completed the task, we are asking parents to post their family photos or the cleaned up photo online on the LoveGorey social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hash tag #my2ktidyup and tag @LoveGorey to be in with a chance to win several prizes. Entrants will enter a draw for prizes in the competition,’ said Norma Quinsey of LoveGorey.

Organisers would like to make the public aware that they are warning against touching any waste as that might be deemed a danger to anyone.

If you encounter illegal dumping or dangerous or hazardous materials, it can be reported using the anti-litter Hotline by free-phoning 1800 386 733, during office hours.

They advise that if anyone does find any dangerous items, to make a note of the location and inform Wexford County Council to arrange for disposal.

‘Parents are asked to ensure the area where litter is being picked is safe to do so and the participants are advised against touching any waste that might be deemed a danger to anyone,’ said District Manager Michael Drea.

Organisers also advise to ensure that the area is safe for children to carry out this tidy up.

Adults should check that with ditches there is no deep or fast flowing water, being careful of barbed wire or electric fences.
