Young people cook up a storm for a special cause

- By CATHY LEE

MEALS on Wheels received an incredible response to its home bake-in appeal when the children of north Wexford got to work for those who are elderly, vulnerable and isolated within the community.

Chairperson of Meals on Wheels Gorey Colin Webb said that after receiving two large trolley loads of baked goods, the response made him very proud to be from Gorey.

‘We had a great response from the community, we are so proud of how

they rose to the challenge, different generations taking account of one another, it was very uplifting. It’s understandable if young people feel worried, anxious or concerned during these times, so the home bake-in was a way to give them purpose and help in our response to the Coronavirus. It also sent a message to the Meals On Wheels isolated recipients, who received the treats, that they were not forgotten and our young community were thinking of them’.

All the baked goods were dropped into Pettitts Supervalu Gorey, and the team at Meals on Wheels Gorey thanked Aidan and the team for facilitating the collection to be delivered with the meals distribution.

Colin said that there was quite the selection of delights, from cakes to biscuits.

‘We got an amazing selection of baked products from the cupcakes with a multitude of toppings, everyone’s favourite chocolate krispie treats, to caramel slices and cappuccino cakes. There were numerous lemon drizzle cakes, biscuit cakes - all were sliced up into individual portions for distribution. Some of the kids had put special messages on the cake packaging, asking recipients to stay safe And well, or that they were thinking of them, and we were appreciative and inspired by the generous spirit shown.

‘The bake products, of course, went down very well. The service has a lot of sweet tooth’s on its routes and there were only crumbs left,’ he said.

In normal times, the service only accepts food donations from commercial kitchens or purchases, but special permission was secured for this event which was a once off.

All At Meals on Wheels Gorey want to say a big thank you to the young people of north Wexford.
