Disgust in Camolin over bottles and cans dumped in the woods

-

SHOCK AND disgust has been expressed by the people of Camolin after locals discovered rubbish left behind at a scenic area within the Camolin woods.

The rubbish included glass beer bottles, drink cans and food wrappers and these were left by the rocks at the river bank as well as in the river below.

‘Everybody is disgusted by it. We understand that everyone is in lock down and we’re bored but throwing glass bottles into the river like that is really bad for the environment, the fish and we’d be concerned too for the kids that go up and into the river in the summer time that could be cut with the glass,’ said a spokesperson for the Camolin Development Association.

‘It’s not that hard to bring your rubbish with you. If you’re out walking and bring a picnic with you – and we often have people from other town lands that come here to enjoy the countryside and their time outside – we just ask that people bring their rubbish with them and, if they can’t, then don’t bring anything at all. We aren’t targeting anyone and trying to stop people using the facilities here’.

It is just one case of illegal dumping that has been taking place across north Wexford after members of Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District heard of a ‘noticeable increase’ in dumping at their recent monthly meeting.

It has caused concerned among locals in Camolin that there may be more instances of this going forward.

‘Over the last month or so we’ve seen people bring bags of rubbish to the Camolin Woods. We have a very active Tidy Towns and they keep Camolin spotless and when they could operate would do litter picks at the woods. The stream that the bottles were in, you have to go off the road to actually get there,’ the spokesperson concluded.
