No further hearings in Gorey this term
THE news that there will be no more hearings at Gorey District Court for the foreseeable future sparked fears for the facility’s future. However, Wexford Courthouse has confirmed that those fears are unfounded.
All local sittings of family and criminal cases will now take place in Wexford Courthouse (resuming on Monday, May 18), as there will be no further sittings for the remainder of the current term at the courthouse in Gorey’s Civic Square.
It could be September at the earliest before doors open at Gorey Courthouse with social distancing restrictions in place.
Meanwhile Councillor Joe Sullivan said that if Gorey Courthouse closed permanently, it would be bad news for the area.
‘As a former garda and now Cathoirleach of Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District, I would see it as a further erosion of the justice services to North Wexford, this following on from the downgrading of Gorey Garda Station. A move indicates that the administration and the enforcement of justice is being centralised to Wexford which doesn’t bode well for the North Wexford area. The current structure where we had a court service in both Wexford and Gorey for north and south appeared to be a very workable structure. If everything was to be concentrated in the south of the county, it would cost garda time with members travelling and losing time in transit. A round trip could take at least an hour and a half to two hours, which is a further stretch on resources’.
