Castletown NS stay active apart
PUPILS of Scoil Ghormáin Naofa laced up their runners recently to take part in the school’s annual Active Week.
A jam-packed week of activities was co-ordinated by teachers Paula D’Arcy and Niall Breen. Each day, the children were challenged to a range of fun and energetic activities to keep the heart rates going in lockdown. The school came together virtually to complete the challenges, while staying apart.
The activities ranged from yoga to dance to circuits to cycling. There was something for everyone and every level of fitness.
Parents and grandparents also got involved and and on one of the days, the school uploaded a beautiful mindfulness practice from one of their lovely grans.
One of the SNAs, Fiona Byrne, uploaded a brilliant workout video which would have put Joe Wicks to the test. The school’s annual Croghan walk had been due to take place on Friday, April 24 but could not go ahead this year. This was disappointing as it’s a highlight of the school calendar and sees families, pupils and staff take on the hike together.
Teacher Paula D’Arcy lives within the 2km radius of Croghan and hiked it that day to mark the occasion on behalf of the school.
Principal Emer Russell also ran a competition where children were encouraged to submit photos of their participation in Active Week at Home and was overwhelmed with the response. The glorious weather ensured that children were out in their gardens fully engaged in the daily activities.
