PARISH DONATIONS

In response to requests from some parishes and parishioners of the diocese of Ferns, an electronic donate facility has been introduced on the diocesan website – ferns.ie.

The facility on the diocesan website – entered through the pink donate button at the top of the opening page – includes the names of curacies and parishes of the diocese which are participating. Parishioners can choose their curacy or parish, make one off or regular weekly payments and a balance sheet and financial transfer, will be forwarded on a scheduled basis, to the local parishes. The facility is for the support of the parish only (insurance, maintenance, light, heat etc). It is not for the support of the priest. No facility has been introduced centrally to deal with this matter.

The diocese is aware that many individuals may chose to make their own arrangements, putting aside money for the support of the local parish and priest, where their finances still permit. The diocese is also conscious of the current vulnerability of the finances of virtually all sectors of society. In the midst of financial distress for many, we recognise that financial contributions to church are secondary to the needs of parishioners.

SOME CAMOGIE HISTORY

HISTORY MAKERS – Seventeen years ago, on Saturday, August 30, 2003, in St Patrick’s Park, Enniscorthy Oulart-The Ballagh camogie team won the Wexford senior championship for the very first time having lost in six previous finals.

The club had been formed twenty-five years previously and had been competing in the senior ranks for 13 years before making the long-awaited and thoroughly deserved breakthrough.

Helena Jacob was team captain who accepted the Packy Kelly Memorial Cup on behalf of her club and team – mates and she thanked St Ibar’s for a very sporting contest and like-wise Rathnure, who they defeated in the semi-final as well as Ferns and Buffers Alley, who they overcame in the earlier rounds.

The team and substitutes were as follows: Ciara O’Connor, Helena Jacob, Colleen Atkinson. Ailish Dunne-Doyle, Karen Atkinson, Mary Leacy, Stacey Redmond, Ciara Scallan, Aisling Moran, Tanya Stamp, Diane Ryan, Una Leacy (1gl.-2 points), Emma Moran (one gl. Two points), Fiona Dunne (one gl. 1pt), Ursula Jacob (eight points). Substitutes were Ciara Storey, Caroline Murphy, Sharon Kehoe,

Donna Kirwan, Liz Murphy, Caroline Fortune, Áine Devereux, Siobhán Cullen, Claire Sinnott, Tracey McCormack. The full-time score was Oulart-The Ballagh three gls. 13 points. St Ibar’s one goal five points.

Richard ‘Butch’ O’Connor was team manager and the backroom team also included Michael Redmond and Pat Ryan along with Martin Storey, First-aid was in the capable hands of Bridget Moran and O’Connor Brothers were the team sponsors.

JUNIOR VICTORY – The day after the historic win for Oulart-The Ballagh senior camogie team the Junior ‘A’ team played and won the county final versus Bannow-Ballymitty, scoring three goals 11 points to one goal two points.

Scorer-in-chief for the junior team was 13-year-old Ciara Storey (two goals seven points) while team captain Sarah-Jo Sinnott led by example from the half-forward line also. Claire Sinnott and Sharon Kehoe ruled the roost at mid-field while Siobhán Cullen was very impressive at centre-back and was well supported by Elaine Dempsey and Kerrie Dunne.

Goalie Annette Sinnott was always alert and vigilant and was fronted by a tenacious full-back line of Donna Kirwan, Liz Murphy and Rebecca Parle.

Áine Devereux added to the score-line when she came on as a substitute and completing the panel were Jennifer Ryan, Caroline Fortune, Christine Fortune and Caitriona Murphy.

The selectors with the successful junior team were Tony Byrne, Pat Ryan and Margaret Leacy.

The players and mentors from the two championship winning teams of 2003 went on to achieve unprecedented success due to their talent, hard work, dedication and commitment and quite a few of them still continue to serve Oulart-The Ballagh as many of them were only in their early to mid-teens when they made the breakthrough.
