FROM THE ARCHIVES

Extract from New Ross Standard Wednesday, August 16, 2000, Looking back – a friend to all.

‘For four decades Kate Power operated Adamstown post office and during that time she was not only a friend but indeed a confidant for many local people. On June 14 last year a date which she recalls with distinctive clarity she stood down as village post-mistress, drawing to a close a chapter in the village’s history.

‘Prior to taking up the position in 1959, Kate underwent two weeks of intensive training in Bunclody, learning such skills as how to operate the temperamental and indeed complex switchboard. During her time she saw many changes including the emergence of the new decimal currency’.

Kate is currently cared for in a nursing home and we send her our good wishes.

REPAIRS TO BRIDGE ON BARRACKS ROAD.

Preliminary work began to repair the massive damage caused to the bridge some months ago when a chunk of wall fell into the river some months ago. Wexford County Council have undertaken this very necessary repair work as it has been in a dangerous state over the last few months.

CLONROCHE DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION.

There has being a fantastic response to the flowering tub planting initiative in the village, Thanks to the following who have offered to plant and look after various tubs around the village Willy and Des Kehoe, Eamonn Murphy Trish Culleton, Jackie Monahan, Martin Kelly, Rev Ian Cruickshank, Marie Asple, Margaret Cogley, Iris Tector, Jeff and Hazel Sage, Gretta Brown, Michael Cogley and Tom and Mary Furlong There is a couple still available if anyone would like to offer their services over the summer. Please contact Lorcan Dunne or any member of the committee.

Clonroche Development Association CLG would complement the people of the village, and especially the business premises, for keeping the village free of litter at this difficult time. We are still very short of staff, far although we have five CE places, two remain unfilled for months. Through the grapevine we’re hearing, Social Welfare are ‘not recruiting’ at present. So, it appears, these places will be left vacant for some time.

Although outdoor staff, like gardening, where there is ample room for social distancing, where signaled for a return to work on May 18, both our Tús and Rural Social Scheme workers have not yet returned. We have an unfilled place on the Tús program. Both the Tús and RSS schemes are administered by Wexford Local Development. To try and maintain the village, and in the knowledge of our short staff position, we’re appealing for help from the community and especially from our own membership. Many hands make light work.

OPENING OF VILLAGE RENEWAL 2019 – There was a large attendance at the official opening of Kiltealy Village Renewal Scheme on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Ballindaggin Pipe Band began proceedings by leading a parade from the village to the park where they marched around the perimeter of the park followed by excited children.

Due to the inclement weather the opening ceremony took place in the hall. Bishop Denis Brennan blessed the park and spoke warmly of the many changes which have taken place in the village where he went to school. Minister Paul Kehoe opened the park and spoke at length of the importance of village renewal.

MC on the day Colm Blake welcomed everyone and spoke of the huge amount of work which has gone into the many projects undertaken both recently and over the years including major extensions and improvements to the Community Hall, formation of the Duffry Social Club, The Blackstairs Playschool and more recently Out of School Club, The Gym, The park, The Tidy Towns, The Walking Trails and the latest amenity the Wood Hub. He went on to congratulate the committee and volunteers on getting the projects completed and everyone who donated time and money and supported the fundraiser, all of which goes to make the village a better and more enjoyable place to live and be proud of. He thanked the public representatives and the clergy both past and present who gave their time and expertise to the many projects.
