FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA

This week’s Blast from the Past brings us back over 20 years to October 22, 1999, when the Hotel Naomh Seosamh was full to capacity as the parish said goodbye to John and Bridget Hehir and family who had decided to move back to their native Clare.

John first came to the parish 24 years earlier as a teacher in Poulfur N. S. where he taught for a number of years before becoming principal of Ballyhack NS John had done tremendous work with the GAA in the schools and in particular his work with the Fethard St Mogue’s club. He introduced a lot of players to both hurling and football for the first time and over the years brought a number of District and county titles to the parish. He was also involved at county level with a number of different teams.

Everyone in the Fethard club would acknowledge the huge part that John played in the success of our senior football team in winning the county title in 1998 with nearly all those players having come through his hands at underage level. John was also a leading light in the Development Committee, who had the foresight to provide the parish with the excellent facilities that we have in Ramstown. Bridget was a very popular teacher in Poulfur School and was held in great respect by all the pupils that she taught. Both Bridget and John did a lot of work with Ring of Hook Community Games teams down through the years and were also involved in many other organisations in the parish.

The younger members of the Hehir family Paraic, Brian and Ruaidhri had already featured on a number of successful underage GAA teams while Cormac and Róisín were only starting out on their sporting careers. Many tributes were paid to John and Bridget and family on the night with numerous presentations from the various organisations in which they were involved. While all the speakers on the night were sad to lose people of such a high calibre everyone understood that they both had never made any secret of their desire to return to Clare some day.

John has maintained contact with the St Mogue’s Club and was a keen supporter at many of their games on the way to the all-Ireland final a couple of years ago.
