Paid €60 for sex at Enniscorthy brothel

‘YOU ought to be ashamed of yourself,’ Judge Brian O’Shea told a man who paid €60 to have sex in an Enniscorthy brothel.

The judge was addressing 34-year-old Steven Casey who was seen going into a premises at John Street on April 27 of last year.

The address of the accused was given in District Court paperwork as The Oil, Oylegate, but his solicitor said he had moved to Kilconnel in Mayo.

The brothel was under surveillance by gardaí at the time and they interviewed Casey after he came out of the building.

Also caught in the same garda operation was 47-year-old Sean Hilliard, 16 Rory O’Connor Place, Arklow.

He told investigators that he had paid €100 for sex in John Street after getting a phone number off a website.

He too was fined €400, with the judge telling him he was lucky that the court had no power to impose a jail term.

The judge felt that the gardaí should be intervening before the men had sex in order to protect the women in the brothels.

‘If they (the women) don’t want to have sex, they should be rescued,’ he remarked.
