Call for tougher laws to cut out dumping ‘scourge’
DESPITE efforts to curtail illegal dumping in the county, a number of incidences were reported over the Christmas break. And Senator Malcolm Byrne, who has repeatedly called for tougher measures on illegal dumping, witnessed first-hand what he describes as a ‘scourge’ across Wexford in recent times..
While running in the Clough area, the Senator saw several large bags of rubbish dumped near the roadside.
Although Wexford County Council moved quickly to clear the bags and is now following channels to identify the culprit, Senator Byrne believes more needs to be done to dissuade illegal dumpers.
‘Sadly, it seems we are seeing an increase in roadside dumping again. I cannot fathom how some people can be so ignorant and irresponsible,’ he said.
‘ The clean-up is costing the county council far too much each year. This has serious environmental impact as well. We need to look at jailing repeat offenders.’
The Fianna Fáil Senator has been vocal in his stance regarding roadside dumping in the past, and although mindful of the efforts Wexford County Council makes to apprehend
those responsible, he believes it may be time to introduce new legislation.
‘I am aware that there may be some issues around the use of CCTV that need to be clarified but if we need to change the law, we shall. This is a scourge. It is disgusting,’ said Senator Byrne.
