Campervan sites are in demand in north Wexford

-

ANY new campervan sites created in north Wexford in the near future, will be private enterprises and not developed by Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District.

During last week’s monthly meeting, Councillor Diarmuid Devereux asked about camper van sites and sought clarification as to what role the Municipal District will play in this.

Amanda Byrne said that any individuals interested in setting up an enterprise should organise a pre-planning meeting. She added that the council does not plan on constructing facilities and the preferred option is for private enterprises to do it.

She said that the council could assist with facilities or amenities, such as waste disposal which is planned for Gorey Town Park.

District Manager Michael Drea said that: ‘Planning does see the need for camper van facilities but the four bay sites in the town park is the extent of what we will be providing as a Municipal District.’

It was noted that insurance would be another aspect, but Cllr Fionntán O Suilleabhain urged the council to support any queries from private individuals, as it’s crucial for the area to be able to meet demand.

He said that, at the moment, north Wexford is not able cater for the demand that exists.

Councillor Pip Breen agreed, saying that north Wexford needed the facilities..

‘When we are out of lockdown, there will be a huge influx and it will be staycation when we can. We need to provide space and it will be a viable business for whoever takes it up,’ he said.
