Vermin, dog fouling, dumping and bottle banks discussed Tara Studios welcomed

-

CONCERNS surrounding vermin, bottle banks and dog fouling were all covered during last week’s meeting of Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District.

Cllr Fionntán O Suilleabhain spoke about a vermin issue at Sean Doire in Gorey which had been affecting back gardens. He suggested a major clean-up of the over-grown area, which would open up a valuable amenity, but was told that the council cannot encourage clean-ups would be deemed to be a large gathering.

Cllr Anthony Donohoe asked whether glass should be separated into colours in local bottle banks. Gerry Forde said they should be separated, as it’s easier for the sorting factory but that people shouldn’t leave bottles beside full bottle banks. Mr Forde said he would check but thought that, if some banks are not full, it would be better to put the wrong coloured glass

into those.

Cllr Andrew Bolger suggested that a ‘crack down’ period on dog fouling be conducted to get fines out. He wondered how many fines, if any, have been given out and was concerned that the council might become a ‘soft touch’ on an issue that is causing major problems.

Mr Forde said that it’s difficult because the warden has to catch the culprits in the act but there will be a campaign of education, signs, getting people to join the green dog walker scheme and, after that, it will be down to enforcement.

Regarding illegal dumping, councillors heard that black spots have been identified and are monitored by clean-up crews. He gave an example of a mechanism in Wexford, where wardens went door to door to ask for evidence of how householders dispose of waste and can produce on the spot fines. They were also told that there was no update on CCTV and the data protection act.

Cllr Donal Kenny asked about derelict buildings but was told this was a planning issue.

Cllr Diarmuid Devereux mentioned the road to Tesco as a litter black spot, but that this was coming up at every meeting.

Mr Forde said that he wasn’t sure if that road was a public or private road, but would check.

COUNCILLOR Anthony Donohoe welcomed the planning approval for Tara Studios at Borleagh during last week’s Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District meeting

When he asked if an appeal had been made to An Bord Pleanala, he was told that it was unsure at the moment. However, the planning section will report back once the period of time for appeals has lapsed.
