Ireland of the Welcomes

Dear Editor,

The article in your most recent issue by Rory Sweetman (March/April 2020) was so incredibly interesting. As an Irish man living abroad for most of my adult life I pride myself on my knowledge of Irish history, however, Mr Sweetman’s story about the siege of Trinity College was new to me and I’m sure to many other readers. Can I suggest then that each issue feature an article on an unknown topic of Irish history or folklore? There has to be people other than me who would love such a thing?

The history of airports in Ireland is well documented. From complete under planning of the country’s main airport in Dublin to the miracle airport in Knock, as told by the famous Irish folk singer Christy Moore in The Knock Song. One Irish airport however, that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves is the regional airport in Carrickfinn, more commonly known as Donegal Airport. Voted the second most scenic landing in the world in 2018 and 2019, coming second only to the landing on the Caribbean Island of Saba. Not a bad auld accolade for a north west corner.

The view of the Wild Atlantic Way from above is nothing short of breathtaking and even the most nervous flyer would be reluctant to miss the views. Getting a window seat is a must in order to take in the wildness of both the somewhat rocky and hilly terrain coupled with the famous coastline.

Daily flights to and from Dublin operate year-round and are usually quite reasonably priced so if you’re planning to see Donegal on your trip to Ireland (and you absolutely should) experiencing this incredible flight should be top of your to-do list
