BE SEASONALLY SUBTLE AND YOU WILL SHINE...

“THE BEST SARTORIAL DECISIONS ARE THE ONES THAT DON’T TRY TO TRANSFORM YOU”

LET’S BE CLEAR before we all get carried away pre-Christmas party – crystals, feathers and disco metallics no longer comprise the key ingredients of festive season attire. I say this because I’ve learned that the best sartorial decisions are the ones that don’t try to transform you into anyone you’re not. Instead they elevate a tired, after-work you into a twinklier, more polished version.

I’m a big believer in making an effort. In fact, there’s nothing I love more than souping up an outfit for a big night out. But sometimes less is more than enough. The best dressed person at a party is rarely the most dressed up. She’s understated and doesn’t lean on dress codes as a guide. There are do’s and don’ts of course – jeans, cardi combo and trainers are out – but in general most of us have given up on expectant codes because we’ll inevitably end up done up to the nines. You can look just as beautiful in a black velvet trouser suit than a shiny, highoctane dress smothered in sparkle.

If you still love the thought of a dress, though, silk, satin or crepe is your fabric in elongated midi and maxi shapes. These kinds of dresses can be worn by day with tights then vamped up for night with statement shoes and a boxy crossbody bag under your arm. Zara always has some trophy dresses worth investing in, as does H&M, Marks & Spencer, and brands like Rixo, Maje, Preen and See by Chloe at Brown Thomas.

If trousers feel more suited to you – personally I can’t do freezing cold nights with my legs exposed any more – add a printed, lacy blouse or shirt and jazz it up with vintage accessories like a brooch or a collar. Jean Cronin Vintage in Powerscourt Centre and Jenny Vander on Drury Street in Dublin are both winners.

Remember the quality and texture is key when you’re investing in staples so work hard on the details. Scratchy lace or lazy embellishment in mass-produced styles will take the tone down, while stretchy metallic jacquard and embroidered silks are chic and will persevere through wear and washing fine. Anything that requires shape-wear or a faffy strapless bra situation can be ticked off the list too, thank you.

If you’re bored of black – it does get old eventually, even if it is showstopping – then emerald green, red and midnight blue are just as dreamy and more eye-catching. You can skip the hold-your-tummy pants and go for satin stretchy cigarette pants with a matching blazer – Monsoon and M&S have fallen in love this season.

And accessories? Nothing will elevate your look more than a belt around your waist or a pair of killer mismatched earrings. Statement vintage accessories tend to help you jazz up a resumé of pieces for multiple dressing options so you won’t fritter away money on several outfits that only work for one night.
