It’s been almost 30 years since Salt ’n’ Pepa declared Let’s Talk About

Sex, but it seems like women find it just as difficult to do that now as they did back then. The good news, however, is that while we may not crow about it, sex is getting better as we get older. Rather than becoming stale, it seems that as we find ourselves in committed, long-term relationships, we find intimacy easier and more fulfilling. It may not carry as much excitement as it did in our youth, but for many of us, that’s actually a relief. As we grow older, we gain in wisdom, experience and confidence, all of which are key to a happy sex life. We’re not as self-conscious about our bodies and our needs, and we no longer fear telling someone what exactly it is that we want. Our body hang-ups also seem to become less significant – they don’t disappear completely but we don’t care about them as much. This is certainly the case if our trust in our partner is complete. Unfortunately, the cultural myth still exists that sex is only for young people – in fact, when our cover star and new contributing editor Kate Garraway mentioned she was writing on the subject to a younger colleague, he seemed bewildered that anyone over 40 event thought about it. So ladies, let’s take back hold of our sex lives – let’s own them and improve them, and feel comfortable in our own skin. The centre of this week’s issue does exactly what Salt ’n’ Pepa wanted us too – so let’s embrace it. Elsewhere in today’s magazine, we meet the Tracey family, who have come through the torture of watching their son battling a serious illness. On page 38, they tell us how they couldn’t have done it without support from the family of Gavin Glynn, who tragically lost his own battle with the disease. It’s a true case of paying it forward and our thoughts remain with the Glynns as they continue to heal after their unthinkable loss. Enjoy the issue!
