I’M MAKING AN EARLY RESOLUTION TO KEEP SHTUM!

- Linda Maher

The article on page 42 of today’s issue is one that resonates greatly with me. It’s always amazed me how people react to the fact that I have never wanted children. It’s not something I randomly wander around telling people but when it comes up in conversation, I naturally give my tuppence worth. I’ve had people tell me I’ll change my mind when I ‘meet the right man’, others have told me I’m selfish, while more still have insisted I’ll regret it one day. I’ve known since I was very young that children were not part of my planned future, but always said that if I met and fell in love with someone who did want them, then we’d have to discuss it – as I imagine even couples who both want children have to do. Thankfully, my partner of three years has four children himself and no interest in any more so it’s not an issue for us. It has, however, always irritated me that other people – sometimes complete strangers – feel like they have an input into a decision that will have no impact on their lives. Then I read the testimonials on page 42 – and felt like such a hypocrite. I’ve certainly been guilty of passing remarks about other people’s families. I’ve commented on the fact that a colleague has three boys, or a cousin who has four children, or a friend who is an only child. Yes, it was usually jokingly, but I, more than most, should know that even in jest, words can affect people. So I’m making an early resolution to keep all thoughts on other people’s families to myself. I can only hope the same respect is afforded to me.

You magazine has always been a beacon for women and their achievements but in today’s issue, we hear from two of my favourite Irish men. Our cover star Darren Kennedy is one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met – yet always has time for a quick chat that usually ends up with both of us laughing uproariously. On page 20, read about his expanding businesses and what he expects from his upcoming stint on Dancing With The Stars. On page 34, the no-nonsense Noel Cunningham reveals his top tricks and tips to make sure Christmas goes smoothly. As general manager at Harvey’s Point hotel, he’s one of the country’s finest hosts – and he’s a master of ensuring everyone has a good time.

Enjoy the issue!
