COLOUR ME WONDERFUL!

-

I met our cover star Trinny Woodall at an event in Dublin last year and I have to tell you she’s as much of a breath of fresh air in person as she is on the page. She absolutely commands attention in any room she’s in just by her sheer infectious personality. And those clothes of course. Never one to pluck the little black dress out of the back of the wardrobe, Trinny’s style is more: the bolder, the better. Sequins, clashing colours and elaborate accessories are her staples. I’ll be honest, the morning I was heading to her launch, I probably agonised over what I’d wear more than for any other work event I’ve ever been to. The terrible thing is, she’d hate that! Her dream is for everyone to feel comfortable in anything they pull out of their wardrobe, without worrying about whether it’s dressy enough, whether the colours match or whether you’ll be able to walk around in those shoes all day. Her style always seems so effortless. That’s mainly because she just doesn’t play by the fashion rules. Things you’d think should never be worn together look great on her. And they’d look great on me too, if I could just own it the way she does. It’s all about confidence and putting complete faith in what you’re wearing. She’s mastered it, while the rest of us are just playing catch-up. It was noticeable that morning that everyone had put in an extra effort – she has that effect on people. But the outfits that stood out the most were not by the best designers or with the biggest price tags, but the ones that took a risk yet looked like the wearer had just thrown on the first thing they’d found. It’s an art and one I’d love to perfect. I’m going to start with Trinny’s advice on colour in today’s issue. I so often fall back on black when I’m not sure what to wear but I’m going to try to be more adventurous with colour. YOU’s fashion editor Grace often chastises me for my love of being, as she calls it, ‘matchy-matchy’, but I just love coordination in an outfit. So it will take a while to get out of my comfort zone, but what better time? After all, we’ll need some colour back in our lives when we’re released on the world again!

It was my mam’s birthday last week and we got a group of friends and family together on a group Zoom call to surprise her. It was the best laugh. If you haven’t done it yet, I highly recommend it, it really gave us all a badly-needed lift.

Enjoy the issue!
