What beauty’s power players put on their faces
They’re the brains behind go-to brands that have supercharged the hair and skincare industry. Claire Coleman finds out how they get to look their very best
CAROLINE HIRONS
Launching a beauty blog in 2010 catapulted Hirons to fame. She now has millions of followers on social media, a bestselling book, Skincare: The New Edit, and her own beauty range, Skin Rocks.
I won’t be seen in public until I’ve done shower, teeth and skincare. I’m 54 – I have to spend my time wisely! If I have to look semi-groomed, I put some JVN Complete Air Dry Cream (from €10, spacenk. com) in my hair and use DryBar’s The Lemon Bar Paddle Brush €32, drybar. com) to scrape it into a bun.
I never turn off the light before I’ve done a second round of skincare. If I get in at 5pm, I’ll do my evening beauty routine then; if
I don’t go to bed until midnight that’s an extra seven hours for it to take effect, so I’ll put on another layer of what I’m using – usually Skin Rocks Retinoid 2 (below, €90, skinrocks.com).
My beauty secret? When I’m travelling I put hand cream up my nose. It keeps the nasal cavity wet so it catches any bacteria. It was a tip I read in Harpers & Queen about 20 years ago and the rare times I forget, I get ill.
I still remember the first time
I tried the
Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 (€102, embassyofbeauty.co.uk) while training as a facial therapist in Paris. It was the 1970s formula you can only get in the
States. (I’ve heard it’s going to be discontinued, so I need to stock up. If I get five bottles they’ll last me until I die – like vinegar, it never goes off.) It goes on, it burns, your skin goes numb, then it starts tingling again and you just think your face is melting. skinrocks.com
LISA ELDRIDGE
Since launching her own online beauty tutorials in 2010, make-up artist Eldridge now has more than two million subscribers to her YouTube channel and almost as many followers on Instagram. In 2018, she launched her own beauty range, Lisa Eldridge, which now has concessions in both Liberty and Selfridges.
I won’t be seen in public until
I’ve curled my eyelashes and put on mascara. I love Japanese-made lash curlers by brands such as Shu Uemura and Surratt Beauty.
I never turn off the light before
I’ve removed my make-up. I hate it coming off on the pillow. I use my own Skin Enhancing
Treatment Cleanser (below, €52, lisaeldridge.com), which takes off everything – waterproof eye make-up, longwear foundation – in one go and moisturises as well.
My beauty secret? I’ve got make-up brushes that are 25 years old because after
I’ve washed them, with Fairy Liquid and a Sigma BrushCleaning Glove (€36.50 for two, strawberrynet.com),
I rinse them in the direction of the hairs, squeeze them and use my fingers to tease them back into shape.
I still remember the first time
I encountered make-up. I opened a kitchen drawer full of foundation – Estée Lauder, Revlon, Helena Rubinstein. When I asked my mum about them, she told me they were all the foundations she’d bought that were the wrong colour.
We called it the foundation graveyard. lisaeldridge.com
