Rewrite the January rules

-

When it comes to January – the month named after Janus, the Roman god of doors and gates – there are two camps. The optimistic one sees it as a fresh start, an opportunity to open new doors (or gates!) in life, and normally brandishes a resolution list as long as your arm. Plus a pristine new gym kit by the door ready to go. Then there’s the other camp, which sees January as one endless Monday.

I’m afraid it’s this more sluggish group that I fall into. I always struggle with January, even foolishly wishing the days away. But this year, I’m determined to approach it in a more upbeat way with a level-headed mix of planning and hibernation.

Here, straight from my diary, is my style and inspiration list to help see you through.

1 Start thinking now about new life-enhancing projects to get your teeth into. Personally, I’m a big fan of home improvements at this time of year and am currently hatching plans for new living room shelves. After Christmas, I find things around the house look a bit stale. A fresh coat of paint – or even just moving pictures and furniture around – is a great way to shake things up.

2 A journal always helps me mentally (and physically) prepare for all the new year will bring. A refill for my three-year-old leather Smythson diary is a must.

Unless it’s on a list in here, it won’t get done.

3 It’s officially cosy season and, rather than cursing the dreary weather, relish wearing your warm pieces – favourite coats, knits and boots. Small touches such as a new beanie (I’ve got my eye on a brushed wool one by Toteme ) or bag (I’m in love with Jil Sander’s latest collection) or some Massimo Dutti earrings will make old outfits feel reborn.

4 Exercise – and not just to lose those extra Christmas pounds but because this time of year is so dark that we need as much natural light and fresh air as our bodies can get. Arrange to meet a friend for a long walk and a natter – both great activities for the soul.

5 If you feel as if you’re in a style rut create a moodboard on Pinterest and start planning some spring purchases to look forward to. The start of this brighter season is the perfect time to inhale some newness into your wardrobe and mentally reshape your look.

6 Scented candles and bath oils are hibernating essentials I always invest in at this time of year. My favourites are Trudon’s Gabriel musky candle and Aromatherapy Associates Relax Bath & Shower Oil.
