Dressing at this time of year can be challenging. With none of us exactly brimming with enthusiasm on these cold and dark winter mornings, it can be tempting to throw on the first thing we see hanging in our wardrobe.
While I’d bet my Jimmy Choos it was during one grey January that the expression ‘They look like they got dressed in the dark’ was first used, the good news is we’ve made it through the bleakest month, so give yourself a pat on your well-layered back.
What’s more, it is now time to look forward to brighter days and hatch some exciting wardrobe plans. To help you, here’s an insider’s peek into what’s going to be popular for spring, and what you might want to consider packing for your next trip. Even better, you’ll have some of it in your wardrobe already…
The white dress
Not exactly groundbreaking news but welcome all the same. On holiday I love nothing more than a simple white number. It’s chic and easy to accessorise. From sheer to embroidered, designers have shifted beyond spring’s usual euphoric shots of colour and frothy pastels with a bevy of swan-white versions. Last summer’s white crochet dresses will also return this year.
The polo shirt
Think Jackie O – chic collars and big sunnies. Because those country-club vibes are back and the polo and rugby shirt are heavy hitters this spring. Team with linen maxiskirts and high-waisted trousers, or layer over your favourite dress.
Sequins, lamé and metallics
These festive favourites have gained new traction for spring as Paris looks ahead to hosting the 2024 Olympics. Get set for silver and gold dresses worn with a poolside tan and, in the meantime, like me, enjoy some extra wear out of Christmas tops by teaming them with cosy velvet.
Roses and 90s minimalist dressing
For romantics, the sweet rose motif on dresses and skirts will be hugely popular. Meanwhile the 90s influence will remain strong, with discreet and logo-less attire here to stay.
Seek out wide-legged trousers, waistcoats as tops, camel pencil skirts, grey tailoring and white shirts – and rejoice that February and some new and old fashion horizons have finally arrived.
