I tried to get Angelina’s jawline – in just 20 minutes

After a lifetime of disguising her own with strategic polonecks, Rosie Green gets ‘snatched’

-

As the late, great writer Nora Ephron succinctly put it: ‘I feel bad about my neck.’ To that I’d add: my jawline. To use the modern parlance, we want it to be ‘snatched’. That is to say, to run along in a sharp, straight line from chin to under the ear, before making a 45-degree turn upwards. I’m talking Angelina Jolie (pictured right), Kate Beckinsale, J Lo and my best friend Jen.

To fake better definition, I’ve often embraced a strategic poloneck (I have learnt the hard way that, if taken too far, said garment can look like a neck brace – see Melissa McCarthy in The Boss).

I’ve also tried various lifting facials, which – thanks to lymph-drainage massage – do give a temporary smoothing effect. I’ve not yet succumbed to Rockjaw – a mastic gum that promises ‘a hard chiselled jaw’ if you commit to three months of ten to 30 minutes of ferocious chewing per day. I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t work. But here’s what will.

€15 TRICK

Sweeping a matt bronzer under the jawline creates the illusion of definition. Use a big fluffy brush and remember to blend down the neck. We love Max Factor Facefinity

Bronzer Powder

€30 FIX

Skincare is never going to work miracles but, used consistently, will create firmer skin and delay the effects of gravity. I like Prai Ageless Throat & Decolletage Creme (right,

€27.60, praibeauty.co.uk) – it has a really lovely texture that makes daily use a pleasure, and is full of active ingredients that are clinically proven to counter skin sagging. Dab it on to the chest and use your fingertips to sweep it up to the jawline and then out along to the ears.

€650 SOLUTION

If you are looking for immediate and dramatic results, consider filler. Last month I had the ‘Garrett Curve’. It came courtesy of Lee Garrett, a medically trained aesthetic practitioner who is well respected among his peers thanks to his 24 years in the industry.

‘When it comes to the jawline, we think it’s all about skin sagging,’ he tells me, ‘but it’s actually more about bone and volume loss. As we get older our bones resorb and so structure is compromised, which means it can begin to look like valleys and hills.’

To combat this, Garrett injected filler into my ‘valleys’, literally filling in the dips with it to create a satisfyingly smooth line. He used a brand called Radiesse, which lasts longer than the more usual hyaluronic acid formulas (for which he charges from €650).

Garrett knows exactly how much to put in and where. This is crucial because the difference between looking subtly refreshed and plain weird can be micro droplets. ‘It is artistry,’ he says. ‘With the jaw you need a nice curve from the back of it to the tip of the chin. And if you weren’t experienced you could make the jaw too heavy and wide, changing a feminine face to a masculine one.’

When he shows me the mirror I am delighted. Strike that – I’m next-leveljoyous. It’s an instant improvement – and, he says, the effect will last about 18 months. While it’s expensive, yes, think how much I’ll save on knitwear. thecosmeticskinclinic.com
