EATING KALE ‘IS AS GOOD AS RUNNING 480KM’
KALE may help to control cholesterol levels. U.S. researchers took 30 men with high cholesterol and asked them to drink three to four shots of kale juice a day for three months.
That’s like eating 30lb of kale, or as much as the average American consumes in a century. So what happened? Did they turn green?
No. But the kale lowered their bad (LDL) cholesterol and boosted their good (HDL) cholesterol as much as if they had run 300 miles (480km).
By the end of the study, the antioxidant activity in the blood of most subjects had shot up — except in the smokers. Free radicals created by cigarettes were thought to have depleted their bodies of antioxidants. When smoking erases the good effects of almost 50kg of kale, you know it’s time to quit.
