Conway leaves it late

- BRENDAN FURLONG

WING-BACK Daire Conway proved the match-winner as he kicked the crucial point for Westmeath one minute from the end to advance by the minimum margin over Wexford at Enniscorthy. A gale-force wind made conditions difficult for both sides, who still served up an excellent and exciting 60 minutes of football. Westmeath had first advantage of the wind but after Paddy Fagan opened their account with a thirdminute point, they had to wait until the 11th for their next score, a rather fortuitous goal. Sam Duncan floated a high ball in from midfield, and when Wexford keeper Ben Turner hesitated, Fagan punched high into the net. Wexford’s opening score took 17 minutes, but just two points separated the sides, 1-2 to 0-3 at the break. Two Shanley pointed frees had Wexford level, but Westmeath never panicked and in the final minute Conway kicked the winner.
