I hope my acting is taken seriously, says Whitmore
SHE’S set to take a whole new direction by trying her hand at acting – and Laura Whitmore has admitted she is nervous that she will not be taken seriously as a stage actress.
The Bray-born TV presenter soared to fame as an anchor with MTV but will soon appear at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in crime drama Not Dead Enough.
And Laura, 31, who is playing mortician Cleo Morley in the production arriving on April 18, said that acting has always been a goal of hers. She remarked: ‘I think I got so comfortable doing television that I could do it in my sleep. I’m definitely out of my comfort zone with this, but I think it’s good to challenge yourself; otherwise life gets a little boring. I think people who know me know that I’ve always loved acting and are not surprised in the least. And for the last few years I’ve been doing acting workshops.
‘But you do worry you’re going to be pre-judged as that girl from MTV who interviews all the bands and now wants to be taken seriously as an actor. A lot of people wouldn’t know that I have a drama background and it’s something I always wanted to do, so I’m taking it very seriously,’ she said, speaking in the RTÉ Guide.
The broadcaster made the conscious decision to move away from presenting for now in order to pursue her acting dream and said that, so far, it’s been going swimmingly.
She said: ‘The cast is brilliant, but it’s almost like going back to school – your brain hurts from learning your lines. It’s so different from my previous work.’
