Country flips sunny side up for hottest day of year

- By Shirley Donlon news@dailymail.ie

FAMILIES basked in glorious sunshine across the country yesterday as temperatures rocketed to the mid-20s.

Beaches, parks and beer gardens were flooded with people enjoying the glorious heat.

In Westport, Co. Mayo it was reported that temperatures reached a whopping 25.5C And student Cian Navin kept the sunny side up to make the most of the record-breaking temperatures – channeling the Sally O’Brien Harp advert where it was so hot ‘you could fry an egg on the stones’ – and fried an egg on a car bonnet.

All good things must come to an end however and, unfortunately, the weekend isn’t looking too promising, with rain and breezy spells forecast by Met Éireann.

A spokesman told the Irish Daily Mail that after today, the weather ‘is going to change’.

It will still be warm and mostly dry today; however, there will be some rainy showers in west Munster and Connacht.

It may also become thundery in these areas later on in the day and this could spread wider across the country throughout the night.

The gloomy weather will continue into Saturday with heavy, thundery bursts of rain across the country.

Luckily for Guns N’ Roses fans, the east coast should start clearing up in the early afternoon and temperatures will drop slightly, promising a cool, dry day for the American rock band’s performance in Slane, Co. Meath, which is set to kick off tomorrow at 2pm. Coming to the end of the weekend, Sunday will be mostly dry with some sunny spells in most places.

It will still be relatively warm – but temperatures will not be as high as yesterday.
