Oh, Mr Darcy! It’s pride and pedigrees at the first Pet Picnic

- By Claire Gorman news@dailymail.ie

MR Darcy was regarded as a bit aloof, but his Irish wolfhound namesake is nothing of the sort going by this snap.

The eight-year-old hound cosied up with adorable chihuahua Rambo at the inaugural Pet Picnic in the Phoenix Park yesterday afternoon.

More than 100 people brought their dogs along to the event to raise funds for Cara Rescue Dogs.

Organiser Cassandra Campbell said the fundraiser, which is in its first year, was a big

success with more than €1,000 donated.

‘We want to do it again next year and make it bigger. It was organised very last minute this year with only eight weeks to plan it but we’re really happy with how it went,’ she said.

‘Most of the dogs that were there were dogs that were taken in by Cara, about 90% were rescue dogs.’

Cara Rescue Dogs is a voluntary community group which was formed by a small group of animal lovers in Co. Laois in 2011.

Since it was established, Cara Rescue Dogs has rehomed more than 800 dogs and has an average of 60 dogs in its care.

The volunteers of Cara work tirelessly in an effort to prevent animal cruelty in the region and rehome unwanted and abandoned dogs.

They take in stray, neglected dogs and puppies into their care and provide them with foster homes until permanent ‘forever homes’ can be secured for them.
