Rory losing his grip on FedEx Cup
RORY McILROY displayed flashes of his brilliance, along with some familiar carelessness, as his grip on the FedEx Cup was further loosened in the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Illinois. Needing a top-four finish to qualify for the Tour Championship next week, McIlroy was rocked by doublebogey on the sixth hole. To his credit, the world number six hit back with five birdies, offset by a lone bogey, to card a two under par 69. That left McIlroy on one under for the tournament, just inside the top 50, with much to do if he’s to qualify for the Atlanta finale. ‘I need to hurry up and do something. I probably need two 65s. I’ve done it before but need to limit the mistakes,’ said McIlroy. At the weatherdisrupted KLM Open in Spijk, Paul Dunne dug deep in the final few holes of his second round as he fought to make the likely cut of level par. The Greystones man was three shots outside the mark with five holes to play before a hat-trick of birdies turned his tournament around as he signed for a gritty 68 to go with an opening 74. Meanwhile Pádraig Harrington carded a first round 72 and signed for a second round of 70 as the Dubliner and Dunne trailed leader Joel Stalter of France by ten shots.
