Murphy’s goal Ernes a replay

- JACKIE CAHILL

SHARON MURPHY’S penalty in the dying seconds rescued a draw for Fermanagh in yesterday’s dramatic TG4 All-Ireland ladies junior football final. The sides will do it all again on October 8 — after the Erne County came from nine points down to earn a replay. Derry were 2-9 to 1-3 clear midway through the second half before Fermanagh fought back. A run of 1-4 without reply took them to within two points, before Derry’s jointleading scorer Emma Doherty clipped over her fifth free of the day. And when Eimear Smyth was fouled with just 48 seconds left, up stepped Murphy to slot her penalty home. It was an incredible end to a final that took some time to warm up, with the Oak Leafers 1-4 to 1-3 up at the break. Derry took over on the resumption, scoring 1-5 without reply with Megan Devine raising the green flag in the 44th minute. That goal had Derry nine points ahead before the Fermanagh fightback began, with Aisling Woods’ 49th-minute goal a crucial turning point.
