QUESTION
A LONG-standing friend wanted to rent a room from me recently and I had to turn him down. He is a very heavy drinker and quite a quiet soul. When the lease expired on his apartment, his landlord didn’t renew it. I feel bad, but my apartment has only one bedroom and my young son stays with me every second weekend. My friend took offence and told me he has had to declare himself homeless. He is very annoyed and upset with me. Was I wrong to do this? I feel really bad about it all.
ANSWER
YOU are not your friend’s keeper, and are perfectly within your rights to turn him down. Your first priority is of course your son. You say your friend is a heavy drinker. You certainly don’t need your son seeing that kind of behaviour. You would also be very tight on space in a one-bed apartment. No doubt your friend got adequate notice from his landlord. Putting him up, even short term, would only enable him to continue drinking and not accept responsibility for his life. You have nothing to feel bad about.
