Wheelchair user pleads with unions to call off World Cup play-off action

-

A WHEELCHAIR user has appealed to the rail unions to call off the planned strike action during next week’s Ireland vs Denmark game, as it would mean he won’t be able to attend.

John Morgan said the unions representing striking Irish Rail staff should call off next Tuesday’s planned action as a gesture of goodwill to the public. Mr Morgan, who lives in Dundalk, said the strikes could prevent him from attending the match in the Aviva Stadium next Tuesday.

He said he had always wanted to go to an international game and has been greatly looking forward to next week’s World Cup play-off.

‘I’ve always wanted to go to an international game because I’ve watched them on the telly, but I’d like to get the atmosphere and say I’ve been there,’ Mr Morgan told the Irish Daily Mail.

He uses a motorised wheelchair which cannot be folded and stored on a bus, and for this reason, taking a train is his preferred mode of public transport. Mr Morgan discussed the strikes on RTÉ Radio 1’s Liveline yesterday and made a direct appeal to Dermot O’Leary, general secretary of the NBRU on the programme.

‘As a gesture to the public, they should postpone the strike just for one day. It would get them more support for their striking – at the moment, there’s a lot of goodwill from the public for the strike and I think that might change if they follow through on Tuesday’s strike,’ he said.
