Vegan Sharon Shannon boots out quirky shoes

- By Linda McGrory

SHARON Shannon has donated all her leather shoes and boots to charity after turning vegan – and shunning animal products.

The traditional music star, 49, who is known for her love of quirky footwear, switched from vegetarian to vegan about six years ago.

As a result, the animal lover immediately packed up all her leather boots and shoes and put them away, never to be worn or tapped to the tunes on stage again.

And last week she did a clear-out, handing more than 40 pairs, collectively worth hundreds of euro, to one of her favourite dog charities, MADRA in Co. Galway.

The fully fledged vegan modelled the wonderful and wacky shoes, coming in all shapes, sizes and colours, and shared photos with her Facebook followers.

She said some of the pre-loved shoes, in sizes 36, 37, and 38, were ‘very expensive to buy new’ .

The musician also said she hoped they would fetch a ‘good price’ for the dog shelter.

Many of the boots and shoes, including high-heels and platforms, would have been worn by the music star in concerts around the world so might make a nice collectors’ item for her super-fans. ‘There are several pairs of Neosens boots in very good condition. These boots are very expensive to buy new,’ said the Co. Clare-born musician. ‘There’s also a very spectacular pair of Geoffrey Campbell platform boots,’ the trad star added. Ms Shannon, who currently wears only vegan-friendly products, saw her old footwear go on sale last weekend at the MADRA charity shop in Furbo just outside Galway city.
