Tougher for us, Page says RTE host

RTÉ sports journalist Evanne Ní Chuilinn has spoken out about the difficulties of being a woman working in a male-dominated industry.

Ms Ní Chuilinn, 36, said that as a female, she felt she had to work harder to prove herself – and that her career progression suffered as a result.

‘What… was said to me when I was starting out, is that I will always have to work harder than my male counterparts because you have to prove yourself that bit more,’ she said. ‘I believe that is still true.’

The presenter is reluctant to pinpoint specific negative experiences where she felt her gender was the issue, but hopes those attitudes will soon be history.

In an interview with the RTÉ Guide, she added: ‘That may be just a reflection of the old culture, where it was mainly men in the press boxes, but it took longer for me to prove myself in my career than if I was a man.

‘I’m 36 now and very fortunate to love my job and travel the world doing it, but I’ve also been very patient to get where I am.’

The Kilkenny native moved from TG4 to RTÉ in 2004 and has covered major sporting events such as Ireland’s Grand Slam rugby win in Cardiff in 2009.

She is currently co-hosting her first live studio show, Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment, with Des Cahill.
