Quick Pick, slow pick-up for €7.5m Lotto winner

- By Lisa O’Donnell

THE winner of the €7.5million Lotto jackpot has finally made contact to claim their prize – three weeks after the draw.

The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold on October 24 at Eason’s in Thurles Shopping Centre in the Co. Tipperary town.

Arrangements are now being made for the winners to travel to the National Lottery headquarters in Dublin to collect the cash prize.

The numbers drawn in the draw on October 25 were 8, 10, 11, 25, 28, 32, with bonus number 35.

A spokesperson for the National Lottery told the Mail that, while it’s unusual for the winner of such a large sum to take so long to come forward, some prefer to wait as they want to remain anonymous. Earlier this year, a Clare farmer took a similarly unrushed approach to collect his €500,000 prize. He waited 89 days before cashing in, one day before the deadline.

‘He wanted the news to die down locally, and he just wanted to come up and collect it quietly,’ the spokesman said. ‘People do take that decision to leave it a little bit longer.’

Winners also hold off on collection to give them time to get some legal and financial advice.

Meanwhile, another lucky player could be set to become a millionaire before the week is out: the jackpot in tonight’s EuroMillions draw is estimated to hit €50million.
