NOTORIOUS murderer Charlotte Mulhall has claimed she had a tenmonth affair with a male prison staff member, the Irish Daily Mail can reveal.

The man, who is married with children, has now been transferred from the Dóchas Centre to another prison, having been found ‘looking flustered’ when he was discovered inside Mulhall’s locked cell on Sunday evening.

A investigation was launched by the governor of Mountjoy Prison, of which the Dóchas is a part. The staff member is due to be interviewed in greater depth about the allegations.

He has not been suspended, as the investigation is ongoing. It is understood Mulhall’s claims of a ten-month relationship are being examined. However, a source said: ‘We don’t necessarily believe every word that comes out of the mouth of a convicted murderer.’

Prison bosses are also examining CCTV footage that depicts the prison worker entering the murder’s cell.

The incident unfolded when the killer, 34, refused to open her cell door. Each prisoner has their own cell key, and, after almost five minutes of knocking, staff used a master key to get inside. When prison officers gained entry, the killer was ‘sitting on her bed’.

They spoke to her for a couple of minutes, asked why she refused to open the door, and then found the man in the en-suite bathroom, standing in the shower fully clothed, reportedly looking

flustered. The Irish Daily Mail understands staff ‘had suspicions’ about the pair.

A prison source said: ‘Charlotte is co-operating fully and says she’s been having an affair with this man for ten months. He’s been transferred while the investigation is ongoing.’

Mountjoy governor Brian Murphy has launched an internal investigation into the matter, which is being taken ‘extremely seriously’. Prison staff are ‘closely examining’ CCTV footage that sources say ‘clearly shows’ the staff member entering the cell of the notorious Scissor Sister.

It is now being trawled over as prison bosses prepare to put more questions to the staff member about what they were doing in her cell and why they failed to open the door.

Mulhall was jailed, along with her sister, Linda, in 2006 over the killing of their mother’s partner, Kenyan man Farah Swaleh Noor.

After stabbing him as many as 20 times, they butchered his body and dumped parts of it in the Royal Canal. His head has never been found. Women sent to the Dóchas Centre are said to enjoy a ‘relaxed regime’. Each prisoner has a cell key to their own en-suite rooms.

This is not the first time Charlotte has been involved in controversy since her imprisonment for murder.

Two years ago, she was said to be in ‘mourning’ following the death of her fiancée. Karen Kelly, then 25, was found lying unresponsive in her home in Farren Park, Waterford, by her father in October 2015. Her death was drugs-related.

Kelly met mother-of-one Charlotte when she was serving a three-year sentence for assault at the Dóchas Centre in 2009. She was released in 2012 and gave an interview in which she spoke of her love for the killer.

‘I love Charlotte with all my heart. It is destroying me from the inside out not being able to see her,’ she said. ‘I sent her a wedding ring a few weeks ago in the post as I’m not allowed to visit her still.’

Nine years ago, Charlotte was also disciplined after photos emerged of her posing up jokingly holding a knife to the throat of a male inmate in the jail’s kitchen.

Meanwhile, love also blossomed behind bars for Charlotte’s sister Linda, who struck up a relationship with a former prison officer who was working in the centre.

Due out in weeks, it was reported that she plans to move in with him.
